Micropower's Aims and Objectives

Micropower is an exciting proposition in its own right. However, there are a number of regulatory and institutional barriers, as well as market failures that require intervention by regulators, government and other policy makers if microgeneration is to fulfil its potential and help meet energy policy goals.

In tackling these barriers and market failures, the Micropower Council has set a number of objectives:

  • To raise political awareness of microgeneration and its benefits, particularly its potential for acting as a catalyst to engage consumers in their use of energy and the impact this has on Climate Change.

  • To continue to work constructively in partnership with the Government to help ensure that the Microgeneration Strategy is implemented effectively. The Council is also backing the work of The Sustainable Energy Partnership in supporting Mark Lazarowicz MP with his Private Members Bill, The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill

  • Regulatory Issues. A number of areas need specific changes to make life easier for customers who wish to install microgeneration technologies. Dave Sowden, the Micropower Council's Chief Executive, is Director of the Microgeneration Workstream of the Ofgem / DTI work programme set up to remove these regulatory barriers. Further information can be found at the government's distributed generation website.

  • Public Policy. The Council supports the introduction of several public policy measures that would help micropower technologies overcome market failures and fulfil their potential contribution to the country’s climate change ambitions. The Micropower Council is conducting a Policy Development Programme to actively tackle public policy issues and involve our members in influencing important policy measures.
