Windsave receives “Best New Product” boost
at European Environmental Awards
6th June 2006
Glasgow-based company Windsave is celebrating after its Plug’n’Save microwind system won the title of “Best New Product” at the European Business Awards for the Environment last night (Thursday 1 June).
The awards ceremony in Brussels was sponsored by the European Commission’s Environment Directorate and a sparkling highpoint of its Green Week, bringing together many senior figures in business, government and non-governmental organisations.
Against major competition from 23 different countries, Windsave was the British representative after its revolutionary Plug’n’Save unit, which feeds power straight into the electricity circuit of a home or office through a normal three-pin plug, was nominated to represent Britain.
The awards’ expert jury praised the turbine unit as a compact, affordable solution for renewable energy.
David Gordon, the Glasgow-based businessman who founded Windsave three-and-a-half years ago to develop the product, said: "This award is absolutely thrilling. It will give us wonderful exposure to markets throughout Europe".
Graham Reed, Sales Director of Windsave said: “This is a tremendous accolade for an ambitious Scottish company with global aspirations and we are hugely excited about the result, which secures jobs for Scotland."
Mr Gordon said that bringing the ‘Plug’n’Save min-turbine to market had been a long and painstaking business. “But that was as it should be, given that it has now been fully certificated, is ready for mass production, and we expect it to be fitted to a considerable number homes and work-places around Britain - and indeed the world."
Former Energy Minister, Brian Wilson, who was one of the first to have a Windsave generator fitted to his home and who advises the company, said: "This is a fabulous accolade for a product which was born and nurtured in Glasgow. The market is now full of new environmental products, and to be chosen as the best in Europe is really something truly significant.”
He added: "What distinguishes Windsave from other efforts to achieve the same end is that David knew from day one exactly what he wanted - an affordable unit, no more obtrusive than a satellite dish, operating off a normal three-pin plug - except that it is sending power up the system, achieving six times the financial benefit compared to selling back to the Grid. The technology is unique rather than being scaled down from something bigger."
