MICROGENERATION ‘CLEARLY ON THE MAP’

Commenting on the announcement of the Government’s Energy Review consultation today, Dave Sowden, Chief Executive of the Micropower Council said:

“We welcome the fact that the Government is reviewing all options and that microgeneration is clearly on the map. The document states that ‘microgeneration technologies continue to offer great promise’ and we urge the Government to support Private Members initiatives like the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill which seek to start the process to remove barriers and set targets for the uptake of microgeneration”.

Recent reports like the Energy Savings Trust for the DTI show that microgeneration could deliver 40% of electricity needs by 2050 and a report by the Sustainable Consumption Roundtable shows that installation of microgeneration technologies can be a big catalyst in changing people’s behaviour on reducing their climate emissions.

Government Press Release

The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill sponsored by Mark Lazarowicz MP received its Second Reading on 11th November 2005 and goes into Committee on Wednesday 25th January. The Bill places a requirement on the Government to report to Parliament on a yearly basis and aims to promote renewable energy sources, including microgeneration and renewable heat.

The EST report, Potential for Microgeneration, study and analysis, is a study for the Department of Trade and Industry into the potential of microgeneration and how small scale localised heat and power could fuel the UK’s future energy needs.

The report, Seeing the Light, by the Sustainable Consumption Roundtable into the effect of microgeneration on attitudes and behaviours in homes and schools, reveals the impact of microgeneration on people’s everyday energy use, and calls for decisive government action.
