PRASEG Sustainable Energy Awards 2005 – Winners Announced

Last night, the winners of the PRASEG Sustainable Energy Awards 2005 were announced during a dinner at the Commonwealth Club, London. The awards ceremony recognised and encouraged the efforts of parliamentarians, NGOs and individuals who have made significant efforts in encouraging Westminster to adopt policies favourable to renewable energy, energy efficiency, and combined heat and power.

The dinner, held in London and sponsored by E.ON UK and ScottishPower, included 120 people interested in sustainable energy – MPs, Peers, NGOs, media and industry members. The dinner was preceded by a drinks reception sponsored by WWF UK.

Four awards were given on the night:

  • The PRASEG House of Commons Award went to Colin Challen MP (Morley & Rothwell)
  • The PRASEG House of Lords Award went to Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer
  • The NGO Sustainable Energy Award went to the Centre for Alternative Technology, based in Powys, Wales
  • The Outstanding Contribution to Sustainable Energy Award went to Lord Ezra, who has a long history in the energy field

Lord Whitty, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, presented the awards to the winners:

"As the prime minister has said … climate change is the biggest challenge facing us all, and the role of sustainable energy, whether in the energy efficiency context, in the tackling fuel poverty context, or in the seeking of alternative energy context, is probably the most significant contributor to a positive, creative and market-oriented solution to us adapting to the challenge of climate change.

"The people that we are awarding recognition to are real contributors [to the sustainable energy field].

"When we award the prizes today, let us remember there are thousands of people out there fighting the good fight for sustainable energy."

Following on the success of the awards, PRASEG intends to maintain efforts in recognising those individuals influencing policy to the benefit of sustainable energy.
