Microgen sets new standards in Micro-CHP Performance

Microgen Energy Limited, a pioneer in micro combined heat and power, has achieved class-leading performance in tests of its latest prototype appliances.

The prototypes, now in the final stages of testing prior to commercial launch of the product in 2007, have met or exceeded all key performance targets.

The Microgen prototypes have been subjected to a demanding programme of over 52,000 hours of testing in the Microgen Technology Centre in the UK and in field testing both in the UK and other key European countries.

Microgen’s performance achievements include:

  • Thermal efficiency equivalent to the highest efficiency condensing boilers in the market today.
  • Electrical efficiency exceeding 15% (gross) 16.5% (net)
  • Thermal turndown ratio of 10:1.
  • Clean combustion with significant reductions in emissions of NOx and CO.
  • A 75% reduction in noise, now comparable to a modern high efficiency boiler.
  • Compact wall-mounted package of generator and integrated supplementary burner.

Further improvements are planned with a view to achieving even greater performance and efficiencies, such as an electrical efficiency of 20% with a longer term target of 25%.

Microgen’s Chief Technical Officer Alan McCarthy-Wyper said: “Microgen has now met all of its performance targets for commercial launch and in doing so has set new standards for the emerging microCHP industry. We are extremely excited about the long-term potential of our unique technology in microCHP and other applications.”

Interest is at an all time high in energy-efficient CHP technology. Microgen, part of BG Group, the global natural gas company, is working with leading European manufacturers and technology providers to develop a range of micro combined heat and power units tailored to specific countries and end users. The first of which is wall-mounted and as such is an ideal 'green' replacement for conventional high efficiency domestic boilers (of which over 1.5 and 4.5 million are purchased every year in the UK and Europe respectively).

The Microgen appliance aims to be the next generation in home heating. It incorporates the latest condensing boiler technology and a Free-Piston Stirling generator, space power technology adapted for domestic use, to convert energy from natural gas to hot water for the radiator and domestic water system, whilst simultaneously producing electricity.
